🔍 What’s Happening: A Quick Overview
In recent months, several tourists planning to visit Nainital reported losing money to fake hotel bookings. These scams typically happen online and are not linked to the genuine hospitality businesses in the town.
The problem isn’t local—it’s national and even international. Scammers from different parts of India and even outside the country have been operating fake booking portals and targeting tourists.
🚩 How These Scams Work
- Fake Websites & Social Profiles
Scammers set up lookalike websites or social media pages that mimic real hotels or resorts. These often appear high on search results or get shared in WhatsApp groups or through paid ads. - Too-Good-to-Be-True Offers
Unrealistic discounts or promises like “70% off if you pay today” are used to pressure you into booking quickly. - Payment to Personal Accounts
Victims are asked to pay via UPI, net banking, or to private accounts—not the hotel’s official payment channels. - Use of Local Villagers’ Bank Accounts
Scammers often exploit unsuspecting villagers from rural areas (Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal) by convincing them to open bank accounts in their name under fake schemes. These accounts are then used to collect scam payments. - International Links
Some scam operations trace back to Bangladesh, where small teams operate fake customer support numbers and social media ads targeting Indian tourists. - Sudden Disappearance
Once the money is transferred, the scammer disappears—blocking calls, deleting accounts, or changing numbers.
🛑 Important: Who’s Not to Blame
Local hoteliers and tourism operators in Nainital are also victims of these scams. In fact, many spend extra effort helping confused guests who show up with fake bookings.
Local police and authorities are working hard to address this issue—but awareness remains the best defence.

✅ How to Book Smart & Stay Safe
Here’s how you can confidently book your Nainital stay:
-
Always use official hotel websites or verified travel portals like MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, Yatra, or Airbnb.
-
Call the hotel directly to confirm details before sending money.
-
Avoid UPI or bank transfers to individuals unless you’re 100% sure.
-
Check for reviews and the hotel’s Google business listing.
-
Be wary of urgency tactics (“limited offer—pay now!”) or unclear account names during payment.
-
If something feels off, pause and verify before you pay.
🤝 A Final Word: Nainital is Completely Safe but do exercise due caution.
Let’s be clear: Nainital remains a beautiful, safe, and welcoming destination. These scams don’t reflect the spirit of the town or its hospitality industry. With a little awareness and a few smart steps, your trip will be everything you dreamed of—peaceful, refreshing, and unforgettable.
